Bows and Browns Fly Fishing Guide Service

The Bow River

RiverThe Bow River in Southern Alberta is an important resource for local inhabitants, in both human and creature form. For the fly-fisherman, it is a trout stream with many flavours. These originate with the Wild Bull and Cutthroat trout in its upper reaches near Banff National Park. Wylie Browns forage in its deep pools, under cut banks and log jams, as the river flows through the beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountains.

The famed "tail water section" passes through the city of Calgary, where the Stampede starts in more ways than one. FishHere the river slows, cutting its way through a prairie landscape where Rainbow and Brown trout dominate. For more then 40 miles a healthy population of well over 2000 trout per mile coexist, and the average fish caught is between 16 and 22 inches.

This portion of the Bow River is regularly referred to as the best trout stream in Canada (and contends for best in all of North America) in terms of trophy-sized Rainbows and Browns caught daily. The fly-fishing season runs from May through to mid-October, excluding some of the month of June while spring run-off is in effect.
